Colleagues & Students Attend PoCC

滨苍听the聽world of educational professional development, there are events and then, there are聽events. This past聽week鈥檚 NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) People of Color Conference, which was attended by more than 6,000 educators and 1,200 student leaders in Denver, was most certainly the聽latter. BFS is extremely proud to have sent 22 colleagues and six student leaders to聽the聽PoCC, which was as much about fellowship, as it was聽the聽brilliant presentations and workshops, and had聽a聽theme of聽惭别别迟颈苍驳听the聽Moment: Anchoring and Enriching Our Education Futures. When it was time for聽the聽tradition of having all Heads of Color to take聽the聽stage for recognition and to introduce themselves, Crissy, who has attended PoCC for聽the聽past 25 years, had聽the聽honor to deliver聽a聽brief, yet poignant message. 鈥淥n behalf of all of these beautiful and brilliant heads on this stage, we would like to thank all who saw us, believed us, and loved us enough to put their very reputations on聽the聽line to see us here on this stage today.鈥

In addition to attending聽the event and absorbing powerful workshops, BFS鈥 colleagues and students had various opportunities to connect with one another in meaningful ways.聽The聽six students (pictured with Head of Upper School, Liz Fern谩ndez)聽also had聽the聽opportunity to make聽a聽college visit to聽the聽University of Denver, organized and facilitated by our Director of College Counseling, Frank Cabrera. That was just one of many highlights for our students, who are returning motivated to share what they have learned with their peers and teachers. This year鈥檚 overall theme was聽a聽call to action for聽the聽unique times we are experiencing, and various聽incredible keynote speakers moved聽the聽audience to inspired thinking about ways to act with purpose, empathy, and skills at聽the听肠别苍迟别谤.

BFS is deeply grateful for聽the聽efforts of our Director of Diversity, Equity, and Belonging, Dr. AnaMaria Correa, who orchestrates聽a聽massive amount of details to make this experience聽a聽reality for our school this and every year. In addition to once again serving as聽a聽facilitator for聽the聽Latinx affinity group, Dr. Correa ensured that all colleagues and students were stewarded through this experience with聽the聽utmost care. BFS looks forward to attending聽the聽PoCC in Houston in 2025.
