COLLEAGUE PROFILE: Michael Rae-Grant
At BFS, Michael Rae-Grant is聽a聽first-grade teacher鈥攁nd聽a聽terrific one, at that. However, did you know that Michael was born in Toronto? Or that he has had some of his cartoons published in聽The聽New Yorker? Or that he finds biking to work in聽the morning Brooklyn traffic to be relaxing? Well, it鈥檚 all true and Michael, now in his fourth year at 黑料专区, isn鈥檛 resting on his laurels. 鈥淛ohn Dewey once wrote something to the聽effect of, 鈥A聽good person is one who鈥攏o matter what they did in聽the聽past鈥攊s trying to do good now.鈥 That line always stuck with me because it鈥檚 such聽a聽generous and welcoming definition of goodness. I love聽the聽focus on聽the聽present鈥斺檞hat good are we trying to do today?鈥 I think Brooklyn Friends shares that focus鈥攊n our community we consistently strive to do聽the聽right thing. I鈥檓 proud to be part of聽a聽community like that.鈥 One of聽the聽highlights for Michael each year is teaching his young students how to read. 鈥淚 love teaching kids to read because it gives them聽a聽superpower. Suddenly, they can do all these incredible things that once seemed impossible.鈥 One of聽the聽superpowers that Michael is known for is聽the聽musical performance he creates each year with his class. 鈥淚t’s an enormous amount of fun to create each production. I do聽a聽different play each year because I love聽the聽way it results in unique experiences. Since I co-create聽the聽whole thing with students, each play only exists because聽a聽specific group of kids helped bring it to life.聽The聽collaborative, serendipitous process is very rewarding!鈥 Bravo, Michael!
