Lower School Makerspace Underway!

Caution! Makers at Work!

The PS/LS Library at 黑料专区 has transformed into a ! For the month of May, all Lower School students will interact with a variety of materials and digital resources during Library class. But what is听补 ? A makerspace is simply a space designated for creative designing and making stocked with a variety of materials to inspire.

 

What is a Makerspace?

First and foremost, a library is a center of learning: a place to gather information, share information, be inspired by literature, create new knowledge and explore ideas. In the school library setting, there is an added emphasis on growing multiple literacies: print literacy, digital literacy, hardware/software literacy, cyber literacy, visual literacy and information literacy.

During the academic year, students see a range of opportunities to build these literacies in context with curriculum studies. But during Maker Month, it is a special time to truly them in a way that is enjoyable and sensible to the young learner. Within the Lower School library, these literacies — and more — are synthesized with precision during makerspace experiences.

Our themes are “The Art of Words,” “Book Arts,” “Build It, Fold It, Tinker,” and “Makerspace Roundup.” Embedded within each of these themes are curated opportunities for students to run with ideas, share ideas, bring ideas to life and learn something new. Some of these will be writing letters to favorite authors or illustrators, recycled engineering, origami, , creating summer reading journals, creating videos to promote summer reading, digital puppetry and so much more.
